Automaker apps sent VINs to advertising and analytics firms

A Northeastern University study found that 7 of 30 automaker apps shared identifiers such as VINs, email addresses and precise locations with advertising and analytics companies. Four GM apps — myCadillac, myChevrolet, myBuick and myGMC — each sent VINs to 10 companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, Pinterest, Snap, Yahoo and Acxiom. Unlike a phone advertising ID, a VIN cannot be reset.
