Steam Frame teardown: repairable overall, but the cooling fan is buried
iFixit's teardown of the Steam Frame found a largely repairable VR headset with quick-release straps, replaceable hygiene parts and magnetically attached lenses. The main flaw is the cooling fan, buried behind the optical assemblies and thermal hardware, while replacement batteries and displays won't be available at launch.
- Fan and heat pipe are separate, but reaching the fan requires deep disassembly
- Head strap uses quick-release latches; face and nose cushions are replaceable
- Lenses attach magnetically to the IPD rail but still need screws to remove
- Replacement batteries and displays won't be sold when the parts store opens
