MeitY widens social media labelling beyond synthetic content

India's Ministry of Electronics and IT sent an October 8, 2026 advisory asking social media platforms to label not only synthetic content but also "manipulated" and "misleading" posts, and to prioritise complaints from "authorised government agencies" over public order. The advisory extends the labelling regime notified via the February 10, 2026 IT Rules amendment, which covered only synthetically generated audio-visual content.
