Deadly Brain-Attacking Mold C. bantiana Cases Rose Sharply After 2023, CDC Finds
Researchers at the University of Washington and the CDC analyzed lab-confirmed cases of the brain-infecting fungus Cladophialophora bantiana. Annual detections rose from 1–5 cases between 2009 and 2023 to 8 in 2024 and 14 in 2025, with mortality of 60–70% even with treatment.
