Tibet's Guliya Glacier Ice Found to Be Over 128,000 Years Old
Researchers analyzing ice cores from Tibet's Guliya Plateau, drilled in 1992 and 2015, concluded the deepest layers may be more than 128,000 years old. The chronology was anchored using beryllium and chlorine isotopes tied to the Leschamp Geomagnetic Excursion over 41,000 years ago.
- Oldest Guliya ice estimated at more than 128,000 years old
- Dating anchored to the Leschamp Geomagnetic Excursion over 41,000 years ago
- 1992 and 2015 cores showed matching isotope records
- It is the only non-polar mountain core older than 100,000 years
