Winduction charges electric bus through its tire at 90% efficiency
Swiss ETH Zurich spinout Winduction demonstrated wireless charging of an electric bus through its rear wheel, with induction coils embedded in the tire instead of the chassis. Transfer efficiency from the road plate to the battery exceeds 90%, and a pilot at Zurich Airport is targeted for 2028.
- Coils sit inside the tire; a road plate transfers power across a minimal gap
- Plate-to-battery efficiency exceeds 90%, with under 10% lost as heat
- A steel-free bus tire is being co-developed with industry partners
- First pilot planned for 2028 at Zurich Airport
