WeLion pushes semi-solid-state batteries for EVs, ships, and drones
China's WeLion New Energy is developing semi-solid-state cells with a part-liquid electrolyte: its 2023 pack with Nio reached 360 Wh/kg and over 1,000 km of range, but only about 200 were built due to high cost. A 2025 prototype hit 824 Wh/kg, with a 410 Wh/kg drone battery due by year-end and a first all-solid-state car battery at 400 Wh/kg planned for 2027.
- 2023 WeLion-Nio pack: 360 Wh/kg and over 1,000 km of range
- Only about 200 packs were made because of high production cost
- 2025 prototype reached 824 Wh/kg, over triple today's lithium-ion
- Current capacity is 11 GWh, with 18 GWh more under construction
