NASA's Roman Telescope Passes Pointing Tests and Sees First Light
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope completed fine-guidance tests from September 15 to 21, confirming stability better than 1/100,000 of a degree. On September 22 its Coronagraph Instrument detected cosmic light for the first time, followed by joint pointing tests on September 27.
- Pointing stability: better than 1/100,000 of a degree for 30 minutes with the Wide Field Instrument
- The coronagraph can hold stability for up to eight hours at a time
- On September 22 the coronagraph first detected light from a star in the Large Magellanic Cloud
- Roman will guide on spectra instead of point-like stars
