California Renters Can Plug Solar Panels Up to 1,200W Into Wall Outlets
Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 868, the Plug and Play Solar Act, on September 30, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, renters and condo residents can connect small solar systems up to 1,200 watts AC through a standard household outlet, provided devices are UL-certified and have anti-islanding protection. Until 2030, utilities cannot require interconnection agreements or device-related fees.
