Chinese 250kW seawater plant produces hydrogen, fresh water and uranium
Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics built a 250kW system that makes hydrogen and fresh water from seawater while recovering uranium, bromine and salt. It yields 380,000 standard cubic meters of 99.99% hydrogen and 256 metric tons of fresh water a year, with 14.4% better electricity use than conventional alkaline electrolysis.
- The 250kW plant produces 380,000 standard cubic meters of 99.99% hydrogen annually
- It also yields 256 metric tons of fresh water a year and recovers uranium, bromine and salt
- Electricity utilization improves 14.4% by reusing waste heat for vacuum distillation
- Estimated hydrogen cost is $2.10/kg with onshore wind at $0.033 per kWh
