NASA funds GIMLI mission to search for a cave beneath a lunar pit
NASA selected a PSI-led proposal, GIMLI, to determine whether a large cave or lava tube extends underground from the Marius Hills pit on the Moon. The mission will use ground-penetrating radar, seismic sensors, a gravimeter and cameras delivered via the CLPS program, with Honeybee Robotics and the Norwegian Space Agency as partners.
- GIMLI is led by PSI and funded through NASA's PRISM program
- Instruments include ground-penetrating radar, seismic sensors, a gravimeter and cameras
- Honeybee Robotics will build much of the hardware; Norway will supply the radar
- A confirmed cave could shelter astronauts from radiation and temperature swings
