Virus stole a human gene 100,000 years ago and still carries it
Scientists found that the molluscum contagiosum virus carries BC200, a jumping gene stolen from human ancestors about 100,000 years ago. The gene is important for brain function and may help the virus infect host cells.
- MCV carries the human jumping gene BC200, acquired about 100,000 years ago
- BC200 is found only in humans and primates and is linked to neuron function
- The gene is abnormally expressed in some tumors and Alzheimer's brains
- Researchers will test whether the virus uses BC200 to manipulate host cells
