Hair loss on Ozempic may have genetic explanation
A study by NYU Langone Health found that increased activity of the GLP1R gene is linked to an additional 7% risk of androgenetic alopecia in genetically predisposed men. This is the first genetic link between GLP-1 and hair loss, though it does not prove that drugs like Ozempic cause hair loss.
- Increased GLP1R activity gives +7% risk of androgenetic alopecia in predisposed men
- Link persisted after adjustments for hypertension, insulin resistance, and testosterone levels
- Analysis used eQTLGen (31,684 people) and Complex Traits Genetics (205,327 men) databases
- Study does not prove causation and lacks data on women
