US rolls back CAFE rules: GM to save $20.4 billion

The US repealed federal tailpipe emissions standards and lowered the CAFE average fuel economy requirement from 50.4 mpg to 34.9 mpg. The Transportation Department estimates GM will save $20.4 billion between 2026 and 2031, with Stellantis at $6.6 billion, Ford at $5.8 billion, Toyota at $4.5 billion and Honda at $4.1 billion. The new rules take full effect by December.
