Zetamix to 3D-print metal parts aboard Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier
Zetamix will install its bound-metal-filament 3D printing setup — a furnace, metal filaments and a material extrusion machine — aboard the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. The project is run by the French Fleet Support Service (SSF) and Naval Group after trials at their additive manufacturing center in Toulon.
- The ship will get a furnace, metal filaments and an extruder with no lasers or powder
- The approach cuts explosion risk and part costs for onboard maintenance
- Naval Group manages and maintains much of the French fleet
- The technology was first trialed at Naval's additive manufacturing center in Toulon
