US Road Cameras Feed License Plate Data Into Federal DEA Surveillance
A 404 Media investigation found that local license plate readers on state roads can be contractually required to route driver data into the HIDTA program and the DEA's National License Plate Reader Program. The DEA's own December 20, 2024 privacy assessment admits such systems inevitably collect records on law-abiding, uninvestigated drivers, while distributed contracts leave no clear owner of the data.
- Data from Flock, Axon, ELSAG and Vigilant cameras flows to HIDTA servers and then to the DEA's NLPRP
- A $306,800 Houston HIDTA contract covered merging data from four vendors
- The DEA admitted records on drivers unrelated to any investigation are inevitably collected
- Unaccessed DEA records become unavailable after 90 days
