Shopify opens checkout to AI agents via WebMCP

On September 28, 2026, Shopify extended WebMCP to checkout, letting browser-based AI agents read, update and submit orders after the buyer authorizes the purchase. Agents cannot enter payment credentials, and no merchant configuration is required.

• Agents get get_checkout, update_checkout, complete_checkout and navigate_to_storefront tools
• Agents cannot input payment credentials; control returns to the buyer for 3D Secure
• Enabled by default for all eligible Shopify merchants, Shop Pay included
• Chromium-only: works in Chrome, Edge and Brave, not Safari or Firefox
