South Africa unveils first working digital ID, but public access is still years away

Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber demonstrated South Africa's first working digital ID in Johannesburg using the MyMzansi app with biometrics and a QR code. Credentials will be issued to citizens in the 2027/2028 financial year, with green ID books ending on 31 March 2028.
