Sony PlayStation 2 MechaCon security chip broken open after 26 years
Enthusiast DiscoStarslayer reverse-engineered the CXP102064 MechaCon chip from the 1999 PS2 Fat over four years. Chemical decapping and die analysis yielded firmware and a software exploit.
- MechaCon handled PS2 drives and Magic Gate and KELF protection
- Four years of reverse engineering were needed to break it
- Chip also used in Namco System 246/256 and Konami Python 1 arcades
- Result will ease PS2 emulation, repair and drive replacement
