Cortical Labs' living CL1 chips with 200,000 neurons already play Pong and Doom
Australia's Cortical Labs grows CL1 chips from real human neurons: about 200,000 lab-grown cells placed on a silicon chip that learn through electrical signals and have already mastered Pong and Doom. A single chip draws roughly 30 watts, versus about 6,000 watts for a typical AI accelerator in a data center. In 2026 the company opened a "Bio Data Centre" in Melbourne with 120 such chips and is building another in Singapore.
- The CL1 chip holds about 200,000 living human neurons on a silicon substrate
- The neurons learned to play Pong and later Doom via electrical signals
- One chip draws about 30 watts versus roughly 6,000 watts for an AI accelerator
- A 120-chip bio data center opened in Melbourne in 2026, with a Singapore site planned
