Sam Altman says OpenAI now has an AI research intern

At DevDay 2026 in San Francisco, Sam Altman said OpenAI now has an AI research intern. Research lead Tejal Patwardhan said the models complete over a third of day-long research tasks unaided and have helped solve more than 100 long-open maths problems.
