Asteroid Bennu Formed at the Boundary of the Inner and Outer Solar System
Researchers at ETH Zurich analyzed 0.5 g of the Bennu sample returned by OSIRIS-REx and found the asteroid formed near the water-ice line, at the boundary between the inner and outer solar system. The finding contradicts the earlier assumption that Bennu originated in the distant region where comets form.
- About 120 g of Bennu material landed on Earth on September 24, 2023
- ETH Zurich received 0.5 g of the asteroid sample for analysis
- Bennu formed near the water-ice line, mixing inner and outer solar system material
- Jupiter likely acted as a barrier during Bennu's formation
