Google Earth reveals giant stone circles in the Andes

Mountaineer Carlos Gobbi spotted a previously unknown complex of huge stone circles, 27–35 meters across, above 3,000 meters in Argentina's Andes using Google Earth imagery. Archaeologists know of nothing similar in the region and suspect a ritual or symbolic purpose, possibly Inca-era; fieldwork begins in December.

• Circles 27–35 meters wide are linked by corridors and rectangular areas
• The waterless site took nearly four days and three attempts to reach
• No pottery or settlement traces found, ruling out a dwelling site
• Mapping, drone surveys and excavations start in December 2026
