EIA: US to add 83 GW of renewables and storage in 12 months as fossil capacity falls

The US is projected to add about 82.7 GW of new solar, wind and battery storage capacity in the 12 months through July 2027, while fossil fuel and nuclear capacity will fall by more than 1.4 GW, per EIA data. Renewable generation rose 10.7% in the first seven months of 2026 and topped 29% of total US output.

• Solar generation rose 22%, small-scale solar 12.6%, hydropower 9% and wind 5.9%
• US coal plant output fell 10.2%
• Over 18 months renewables and batteries added 88.7 GW, fossil and nuclear just 2.6 GW
• EIA projects 43.6 GW of solar and 23.4 GW of storage by August 2027
