Rice-Grain-Sized Diamond Quantum Sensor Measures the Heart's Magnetic Field
Physicists at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz used a diamond NV sensor under 0.5 mm³ for contactless magnetocardiography. The sensor operates at room temperature and is built into a fiber-based endoscope, simplifying mapping of the heart's and brain's magnetic signals.
- The diamond NV sensor has a volume of less than 0.5 cubic millimeters
- It operates at room temperature, unlike SQUID and OPM systems
- Flux concentrators could amplify the signal by more than 100 times
- Target applications include early detection of myocarditis and epilepsy
