US DOT to cut fuel economy standards, raising fuel costs by 45%

The US Department of Transportation will finalize a rule Monday lowering the 2031 CAFE target from 50.4 to 34.5 mpg. NHTSA estimates the change will raise fuel costs by $185 billion and carbon emissions by 5%, with average fueling costs up at least 45%.
